New ferret, A couple questions?

I just got him today and i’ve never had a ferret before.
1) What is his coloration called?
2) will the two dot tattoos on his ear fade away eventually? (hes a marshals ferret)
3) He has a 3 tier cage all to himself (its as tall as me 5’4″) is that big enough for two, or should I just have one?
4) Is anything that’s child proof also ferret proof?
5) are cat toys OK for him to play with?
6) can he eat cat food safely? (don’t worry i have ferret food)
7) he sneezes alot, but does not have a discharge, is this normal?

1) What is his coloration called?
he’s a champagne…possibly a champagne point. Since he is still young his markings may change. Also, if his diet is good, his coat will change colors and marking shape.

2) will the two dot tattoos on his ear fade away eventually? (hes a marshals ferret)
nope. They are permanent. But they are a good thing. They are a sign that you have a pure-breed ferret. My first ferret ever was a Marshals Farm and so is the girl i have now.

3) He has a 3 tier cage all to himself (its as tall as me 5’4″) is that big enough for two, or should I just have one?
That is plenty of room for two or even three! Just don’t forget that you want to allow your ferret, out-of-cage time too. Give him at least 4-6 hours of free time. Ferret-proof your room too.

4) Is anything that’s child proof also ferret proof?
no. Ferrets are much smaller than children. They also can get into spaces that children can’t. Make sure there are no holes, loose boards, or open heating areas/wires. Sometime baby gates help block your ferret from going into places you don’t want them to. I use a piece of plywood (2.5′x3.4′x.5″). They can’t climb over a smooth piece of wood. My ferrets are not allowed in the kitchen, bathroom or closet. I keep them away from cabinets and chemicals. I just don’t bother to “baby” proof because they aren’t allowed in the areas that would normally be baby proofed.

5) are cat toys OK for him to play with?
YES! Ferrets love the cat toys that have bells inside. I bought a thing of 12 cat balls with jingles for a buck at Walmart. Also, stuffed animals with all the “small parts” removed, baby bath toys, an empty box, a crinckle tube, painters plastic…the possibilities are endless!

6) can he eat cat food safely? (don’t worry i have ferret food)
Yes and No. He can, but it has to be mixed with ferret food. Make sure it is HIGH PROTEIN KITTEN food. It should be mixed 1 part to every 3 parts ferret food. If you can avoid the kitten food, do so. Its not advised, but it is possible. The ferret digestive tract is too fast for kitten food, so the ferret won’t get the nutrients needed. I mix my food and add Ferretone and other vitamins to the kibble.

7) he sneezes alot, but does not have a discharge, is this normal?
Ferrets sneeze. There are even sneezing contests out there! Just make sure that you aren’t using Cedar bedding and clay/dusty litter. Ferrets can sneeze and develop allergies to these products. If your home is too dusty or dirty too, it can lead to the sneezing. You may want to dust and vacuum.
